Title
Early Medieval bird pendant.
Description
English: Gilded cast copper alloy pendant in the form of a bird. Where the head would have been is suspension loop set at 90° to the rest of the pendant; the loop is worn at the top. There is a slight transverse ridge on the obverse below the loop at the top of the short neck; the wings are folded at the sides but converge from the body at about the middle; there is a short rounded projection on either side of the body just before the short tail begins to fan out. The lower part of the right wing is broken off; the lower part of the left wing is bent inwards curving slightly under the tail. The body is decorated with cross-hatched lines of gold, and the wings with longitudinal lines of gold. There are traces of gilding at the neck. The reverse is undecorated. Flat in section, but curving slightly in the horizontal plane. Probably Viking or Medieval. Length 32.8mm, width 14.3mm, thickness variable 0.8mm (across lower wings) – 2.0mm (across shoulders), width of loop 4.5mm, thickness of loop 1.3mm, internal diameter of loop 2.2mm-3.0mm, weight 2.49g. A pendant of similar shape although with different decoration, is published in 'Wikinger Warager Normannen; Die Skandinavier und Europa 800-1200' (1992), p.304-5 no.297, dated to the second half of the 9th century from Yaroslavl, Russia.
