On July 13, 2018, NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over the Timor Sea and acquired a true-color image of the east Sunda Islands. The large island in the southeast section of the image is Timor, an island divided.

Description
English: On July 13, 2018, NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over the Timor Sea and acquired a true-color image of the east Sunda Islands. The large island in the southeast section of the image is Timor, an island divided. The western part of the island belongs to Indonesia while the eastern section is an independent nation known as the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (East Timor). According to the CIA World Factbook, the Portuguese began to trade with the island of Timor in the early 16th century before colonizing it in mid-century. Portugal ceded the western portion of the island in 1859, while East Timor declared itself independent from Portugal in 1975. It was occupied by Indonesian forces nine days later. In 1999 East Timor voted for independence, but a period of violence ensued. It was not until 2002 until Timor-Leste was internationally recognized as an independent state.
