Summary[edit]

Description
English: A clock tower was built on top of Macedonia Tower, one of the largest towers of Edirne Castle, on the order of Governor Hacı İzzet Paşa in 1884. This 48m tall tower had an octagonal plan with windows on every level. The clock, produced in France, was mounted in 1886. When the original wooden construction was destroyed by fire, the tower was rebuilt in 1894 from stone and brick and the clock renewed in 1926. Due to its neo-classical architecture its appearance differed from other Ottoman clock towers. In 1953 the tower was again partially destroyed, this time by an earthquake. Following a report by İstanbul Technical University, that studied the tower’s structure, silhouette and lack of heritage status, the decision was made to tear it down on July 6, 1953.
