The officials of the FortWorth company have made a study of its standardsingle-truck cars and believe that some of them canprofitably be equipped with the necessary automaticdevices and otherwise fully adapted to serve asauxiliaries to the new light-weight cars. They mayweigh nearly twice as much as the new cars, butthe cost of moving the excess weight and thegreater wear and tear on the roadbed during a fewhours of the day should be less than the addedfixed charges on entirely new lighter cars. It is by no means impossible that traffic studiesmay disclose some situations where double-truckcars may also be similarly adapted and used, there-by further preserving existing investment. Theproblem of developing a proper economic balancebetween new and old equipment by such means isone which will require careful, continued study inthe light of experience with the light-weight safetycar. It will be a different problem for each com-munity to which such studies are applicable.
