Summary[edit]

Description
English: Cased daguerreotype showing a man with a mustache and shoulder-length hair wearing a suit with his arm resting on the back of the chair he is seated in. MacDonald was a Confederate officer with the Missouri State Guard who was among those arrested at Camp Jackson. He was the only prisoner taken who refused parole, which included pledging not to take arms against the United States. He was released by the United States District Court on a writ of habeas corpus. After his release, MacDonald rejoined the Missouri State Guard to fight at Wilson's Creek, Lexington, and Pea Ridge. In mid-1862 he raised a regiment of cavalry to which he was appointed colonel. The unit served as part of the force led by Gen. John S. Marmaduke's raid into southwest Missouri in early 1863. MacDonald was killed in battle near Springfield on Jan. 11, 1863.
