At Algeciras the road ends, and to reach Gibraltarby land, one must walk or ride along the muletrack which alone leads to la linea. Algeciras isdelightfully situated in the centre of a beautifulbay, at the extremity of which rises the Kock.Between the two ply steam ferry-boats, which inhalf an hour convey the traveller across the dancingwater. The hotel we found, to our joy, was underBritish management, and was, without exception,the most comfortable and delightful place we hadbeen lucky enough to find during our wanderings,not only in Spain, but in many other countries. Our stay here is amongst the most pleasantrecollections of the tour. The weather ever since wehad entered Andalucia had been magnificent, andhere the heat was saved from oppressiveness by theclose proximity of the cool waters and the manyshaded palms.
