ONION— Continued
Ailsa Craig Onion

A VERY LAKGE BRITISH VARIETY ::

RAPIDLY GAINING POPULARITY IN AMERICA
This is one of the largest of the British sorts, which is, used very
extensively in private gardens both for ordinary use and for exhibition
purposes. European Onions do not, as a rule, grow well in America
until thoroughly acclimated. This variety has proved to be an excep-
tion, and has done well since its first appearance here. Grown from
seed raised under our supervision, it has become one of the largest and
most useful Onions. Gardeners along the Hudson River in New York
frequently bring us very large specimens, grown especially for exhibi-
tion, five inches in diameter, and weighing two pounds apiece.
It is a little flattened at the base and pointed slightly at the top.
The skin when ripe is rather dark straw color, the flesh pure white,
very mild in flavor, and always quite tender.
We do not advise its use for keeping. Our Globe varieties and
Prizetaker are better. (See cut.) Price, 25c. pkt., 60c. oz., $2.00 \i lb.
WE ALSO OFFER THE FOLLOWING VARIETIES
(1 03. for 100 feet of drill.)
EXTRA EARLY FLAT RED. Remarkably early, of medium size; a good keeper,
shape uniform, flat-round; an excellent variety for home gardens. Price,
5c. pkt., 20c. oz., 55c. \i lb., $1.75 lb.
ROUND YELLOW DANVERS. Similar to Yellow Globe Danvers, except that
it is flatter. It matures very early, and is a reliable and large cropper. Price,
5c. pkt., 15c. oz., 45c. K lb., $1.40 lb.
WHITE BUNCH. Of vigorous growth, producing large, showy, white Onions, of fine,
mild quality, especially adapted
for using when young.
Price, 10c. pkt., 25c.
, 80c. \i lb.,
$3.00 lb.
PICKLING VARIETIES. (Must be sown very thickly to produce small bulbs.)
Adriatic Barletta. A small, white variety of great value for small
pickles. Price, 10c. pkt., 30c. oz., 85c. H lb., $3.00 lb.
Queen. Produces little, pearly-white bulbs, very tender. Price, 10c. pkt.,
30c. oz., 85c. \i lb., $3.00 lb.
EUROPEAN VARIETIES. (Used in the South. Sown in early fall, they
mature very early in the spring.)
Giant White Garganus. A large, fiat, white variety, very mild and
tender. Price, 10c. pkt., 25c. oz., 75c. H lb., $2.50 lb.
Mammoth Pompeii, or Red Garganus. A red-skinned, but white-fleshed
variety of the preceding. Price, 10c. pkt., 25c. oz., 75c. M lb., $2.50 lb.
Red Bermuda. An excellent stock of this most popular sort. Price,
10c. pkt., 25c. oz., 85c. v i lb., $3.00 lb.
White Bermuda. The most largely grown of its class. Price, 10c. pkt.,
30c. oz., $1.00 H lb., $3.25 lb.
Henderson^ Superior Onion Sets
In private gardens, the cultivation of the family supply of
Onions from sets has much to recommend it. The amount of
labor involved is less, the danger of loss from maggots and other
insects is considerably reduced, the crop is surer to grow, and is
ready for use weeks in advance of that grown from seed. On a
small scale where the cost of sets is not a serious item, we urge
customers to use them. In fact the ideal way is to use both sets
and seed — the sets for use in the spring and summer, and seed to
grow bulbs for winter keeping. (See cut.) We offer sets of the
three standard varieties mentioned below, the descriptions of
which will be found on pages 43 and 45 of this catalogue:
POTATO ONION SETS. Early and of rapid growth; excellent for pulling

Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
