This instrument is one of the oldest used ingymnastics. It may be seen in the Latin workof Mercurialis de Arte Gymnastica; and thoughits form was not precisely the same as at present,the result produced was similar. It has beenlong in use in England, where it enters into theschool exercise of most seminaries for the instruc-tion of ladies. For children from six to ten years of age, dumb-bells should not weigh more than from three tofour pounds each; and for children from ten tofifteen years of age. they may weigh from fourto six pounds each. To use dumb-bells with all the advantage theyadmit of, the young person should stand in thefundamental position already described.
