| Description |
English: This water tunnel is located fairly high on the mountains, but it is easily accessible. The photo shows the eastern portal at 2335 m ü.M./7661 ft ASL. The tunnel with a length of 1010 meters crosses under the Tälligrat, a spur of the Eggishorn mountain. The construction began in 1890. On the other side, there was then a large proglacial lake at the Aletsch Glacier. The lake caused repeatedly floodings in the valley at the lower end of the glacier. The tunnel should limit the stowage height of the proglacial lake as overflow. But that worked only once. The Aletsch glacier melted rapidly and retreated. The tunnel was useless. To use the water that now posed no danger, a dam was built and a water pipe was laid through the tunnel. In addition, the tunnel was opened to hikers and mountain bikers. Switzerland, July 7, 2016.
