Description
English: The green land of the Democratic Republic of Congo was covered by fire and smoke in early July 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the smoky scene on July 6. The distribution, large number, and time of year suggests that these fires have been deliberately set to manage land. Such agricultural fires are common in this region as a part of tradition agriculture practices that have been used for over 10,000 years. Farmers often use fire to the remains of old crops to clear them for re-planting or to freshen fields for pasture. Fire can also be used in “slash and burn” agriculture – a practice of clearing forest to use for crops or pasture. Such practices are one major factor in forest loss in this region. According to Global Forest Watch there were 96,817 fires burning in the Democratic Republic of Congo from July 2 through 9.
