Summary[edit]

Description
English: Hibiscus is also known as Gumamela in the Philippines. The 'Rubra' variety has red flowers.

Double Red Hibiscus (n.) Tagalog/Pilipino: Gumamela, Hiligaynon: Tapulanga, Kinaray-a: tapurangà, Cebuano: antulanga, Ilocano: kayánga, Kapampangan: gumāmēla; Botanical name: Hibiscus mutabilis[1]; also known as Confederate rose, Dixie rosemallow, Confederate rose, cotton rose or cotton rosemallow, Shoe flower is a bushy tropical hybrid, fast-growing plant with brilliant red flowers with yellow anthers and widely distributed in many parts of the Philippines and other tropical countries. The structure is quite delicate. These blossoms can make a decorative addition to a home or garden, but they also have medicinal uses. Hibiscus has been used by different cultures as a remedy for several conditions. Egyptians used hibiscus tea to lower body temperature, treat heart and nerve diseases, and as a diuretic to increase urine production. Peoples in India use the oil from the flower as a shoe polish giving it the names Shoe Plant and Shoe Black Plant.
Local girls put it behind their left ear to indicate they are single, and behind their right ear to show that they are in a relationship with someone.
Name Story Dixie rosemallow It used to be one of the most common flowers in the southeastern part of the United States, and Dixie is the informal name of the land in this area. Hence, it is known by most people as the Dixie rosemallow.
