By commencingto climb the hill some distance before the caiion is reached,however, it is practicable to reach a point some three hun-dred feet above the water and above the canon, where a road-bed could be built along a steeply sloping, grassy hillside,which further up the stream runs into a fiat bench. Fromthis point to the head of the river there appears to be nodifficulty in building a roadbed. About the Rocky Fork routeless is known. If there is any practicable way for a railroad to the CookeCity mines without infringing on the Park, Congress has nobusiness to grant permission for a tie to be laid within thatreservation. Tbat such routes do exist on the eastern slopeof the range can be easily shown, and until the most search-ing investigation has demonstrated their impracticability,Congress should refuse even to consider the proposition tolay rails within the Park. 202 FOREST AND STREAM. There is a hidden motive for the eagerness with which thisgrant is sought; a motive that has not yet been acknowledged.It has probably to do with the natural wonders which liealoug the proposed line, and which may be included in anygrants of land which may be made to the Cinnabar &Clarks Fork Bailroad for stations and other purposes. Wenotice among the names of those who urge the granting ofthis right of way that of C. F. Hobart, who has beforereached out an eager hand for the National Park, happilywithout much success. An inspection of the map willshow that the proposed line would pass close by SodaButte Springs and not very far from the wonderful fossilforest.
