English: This photograph depicts the four-masted German barque PAMIR in Sydney Harbour, probably during its 1947 visit. It was the flagship for Sydney's Australia Day regatta, which was held on the public holiday on 27 January 1947. The vessel, along with a naval gunboat, was moored at Kurraba Point and acted as the starting and finishing line for some 2,000 participants of the 111th Anniversary Regatta. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. |
