SPIKING THE GUNS OF FOET MOULTEIE BY MAJOE ANDEESON, BEFOEE ITS EVACUATION, DECEMBEE 26th, I860 Toward the middle of December it became evident, from the magnitude of military operations going on, and other indications, coupled withsignificant threats in the South Carolina Convention and out of it, that an occupation of Castle Pinckney and Fort Sumter was meditated. MajorAnderson decided to anticipate the South Carolinians in their contemplated manoeuvre. Accordingly, on the night of December 26th, at the verytime the South Carolina Commissioners had arrived in Washington to demand the surrender of the forts, he evacuated Fort Moultrie, after spikingthe guns and providing for the destruction of their carriages and other material by fire, and with the aid of three small vessels successfully trans-ferred his little command to Fort Sumter. 65
