Summary[edit]

Description
English: Scene in La Barque, France, during World War I. The effect caused by gunfire which has left a part of a brick wall standing, with a lacework of huge holes through it. The caption refers to La Barque, which is probably the village of La Barque, in the Ancre area of France.

Le Barque was one of the villages which was destroyed in the German withdrawal during the spring of 1917. The destruction not only disrupted communications for the advancing Allies, but also left them responsible for a dispossessed civilian population.
