Behind him Oudinothad tlie broad, swampy and waste tracts of the Nute, and thefortified position south of Berlin was forced. He now encampedfifteen miles from the city, and had still to cross only the broad andin part swampy Kiefern woods, in order to reach the dry and optuplain on the other side. This gorge in the wood could, however, l)epassed only by the army moving in separate divisions.
