/\j. Cb^^c^. CONNECTICUT 1387 19, 1891; Fannie, January 6, 1893; Mary, Alay15, 1894. (MI) George E., son of Rufus and Esther(Peck) Somers, was born in Newtown, Con-necticut, January 21, 1833. He received hiseducation in the pubhc schools of his nativetown. At the age of nineteen years he beganlife as a mechanic at Naugatuck, later going toWaterbury, Ansonia and other cities, finallylocating at Providence, Rhode Island, wherehe was employed by the Gorham Manufactur-ing Company, the well-known silversmiths,for a period of four years. When the civilwar broke out he returned to Ansonia andengaged in the manufacture of cartridge shellswith the firm of Wallace & Sons. In Janu-ary, 1865, Mr. Somers returned to Water-bury, and was for one year with the Armyand Navy Button Company, then as mastermechanic with the Benedict & Burnham Com-pany. While in the employ of this concernhe went to Europe and, upon his return, in-troduced the manufacture of seamless brassand copper tubing in the N
