lignite is exposed in many of the bluffsnear Shreveport. At Arsenal hill this bed is about two feetthick. It is of fairly good^uality and is reported to have beenused as fuel in the Confederate Arsenal at this point. S. Dana Hayes, State Assayist of Massachusetts, published ananalysis of a sample of lignite from the banks of the Red riverabout two miles below Shreveport, in Louisiana in the Chem-ical News, vol. 30, 1874 page 153. The analysis was as follows : Analysis of Lignite from Shreveport (by S. Dana Hayes) Water 15.25 Volatile matter (bituminous) 41-30 Fixed carbon (coke) 37-55 Sulphur Trace Ash 5.89 99 99 Underlying Bellevue is a thin bed of lignite. Sec. IF, 18 N., S W.—This locality is interesting because thelignite is here of sufficiently good quality to have been used asfuel in a steam shovel working on the V. S. & P. R. II) General Geology : Economic Products 137 miles west of Homer and at several places between Gibbslandand Bienville. In Catahoula parish, south of Rosefield, a small bed of poorlignite is found at the base of the Vicksburg beds. This locality-is called the **coal mine. In Sec. 31, 11 N. 5 E., several pitshave been dug in this bed. Lkad and Zinc Ores For a discussion of the lead and zinc ores of the State, seeGeolog)^ Belle Isle, in special report on Five Islands. Marl The marls which have thus far been examined have been some-what disappointing. The amount of phosphoric acid is verysmall and the general character of marls is such as to greatlyrestrict their use. Several nodules of iron have been picked up in the vicinity ofHomer and Lisbon, which contain nuceli of rich phosphate oflime. The extent of this deposit is still an open question, butit will be unwise to count too much on their value.
