German Railways Banknote 5 Billionen Mark 1923

Summary[edit]

Description
English: German Railways Banknote 5000000000000 Mark 1923 Hyperinflation Notgeld Stuttgart, Württemberg, Germany

Fünf Billionen Mark (or in English language 5 Trillion) Deutsche Reichsbahn, Reichsbahndirektion Stuttgart, 9. November 1923./ "5 Billionen"at top l. of a train crossing r. the König-Wilhelms-Viadukt, a steel bridge opened 1896 at Stuttgart-Bad Cannstadt. Pick S1380

The Hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic ended on 16 November 1923. On November 16, 1923, the new Rentenmark was introduced to replace the worthless paper marks issued by the Reichsbank. Twelve zeros were cut from prices, and the prices quoted in the new currency remained stable.

Before enough new bank notes of the Rentenmark were available for circulation, the old bank notes were used as follows, before they could be redeemed:

500000000000 Mark (Fünfhundert Milliarden, or in English language 500 Billion) = 50 Rentenpfennig (1/2 Rentenmark)

5000000000000 Mark (Fünf Billionen, or in English language 5 Trillio) = 5 Rentenmark. etc.

Therefore, bank notes in Milliarden, and Billionen denomination are quite often heavily used, and also got scarce because of redemption.
