Summary[edit]

Description
English: Engraving by B. Winkles of graitney (or Gretna) Hall in Gretna Green, Dumfries and Galloway, where the innkeeper John Linton managed the marriage shop.

Gretna Green was the first village located in Scotland on the old coaching route between London and Edinburgh. Due to Hardwicke's marriage act in 1754, where marriage before the age of 21 was only permitted with parental consent, young couples began to elope 'over the border' to Gretna Green, where marriage was legal at 16 years of age.
