Not easy to see in this photo, but Guanyin is truly gender-ambiguous here, sporting a feminine hourglass figure but being topless with nice male torso at the same time. Moreover, throughout South Korea, all English-language references to Guanyin use the Sanskrit male name, Avalokitesvara, which I was not happy about. (The Korean references, of course, say Gwan-se-eum.) The printout on the left window says that to better do the work of hearing the world's cries and helping those in need, Guanyin can grow ten extra faces on her head and a thousand arms. |
