The sketches left by Rubens, of which there are many,show that he followed the method thus indicated. We aretold by Merimee that this masters process of first washingin his shadows, with some brownish color, in the way wehave already indicated after the counsel of Bouvier, wascommon to the principal painters of the Roman and Flo-rentine schools. There are extant at Florence two pictures,one by Da Vinci, and the other by Fra Bartolomeo, that aresimply deadcolored ; and the effect is made out preciselyin that manner. Rubens, when in Italy, abandoned this 19fi HANDBOOK OF OILPAINTING . transparent method for the solid painting of Correggio, buton his return he resumed his first manner as derived fromhis master Otho Venius.
