Ranks first in cattleand cotton, second in sugar, sheep, mules and horses. Coal area6,000 sq. miles, quality good. Iron ore and salt deposits extensive.Other minerals found, but extent unknown. Improved landaverages $8, and unimproved $3 to $4 per acre. Uncultivated andtimber land seven-eighths of area, timber area one-fourth. Cli-mate varies, temperate at North, semi-tropical at south. Healtheverywhere most excellent. Thermometer ranges from 35 to 98deg., but seldom rises to the latter temperature. At Austin avera-ges winter 56 deg., summer 80 deg.
