Those views have never been entirely acceptedin this country, although they have been loudlytaught in the schools and extensively printed inhandbooks. I have strongly objected to the supposititious con-nection of the two fungi, for the following reason (oneamongst many others). It is, that corn is so seldomfree from red rust, and barberry-bushes are so seldomfree from the fungus of barberry blight, that there isnever any certainty that both corn and barberry-bush do not possess traces of the disease before the io4 HARDWICKES SCIENCE-GOSSIP. experiments are concerned. If apparently healthyleaves of corn are taken, and apparently healthy leavesof barberry, and these leaves are microscopicallyexamined, fungus mycelium will be commonly found
