After Professor de Bary had ex-pressed his opinion very little more was said ordone, and the majority of botanists on the Continentaccepted and taught as truth Professor de Barysviews. Those views have never been entirely acceptedin this country, although they have been loudlytaught in the schools and extensively printed inhandbooks. I have strongly objected to the supposititious con-nection of the two fungi, for the following reason (oneamongst many others). It is, that corn is so seldomfree from red rust, and barberry-bushes are so seldomfree from the fungus of barberry blight, that there isnever any certainty that both corn and barberry-bush do not possess traces of the disease before the io4 HARDWICKES SCIENCE-GOSSIP. experiments are concerned. If apparently healthyleaves of corn are taken, and apparently healthy leavesof barberry, and these leaves are microscopicallyexamined, fungus mycelium will be commonly found
