that wesee on her canvases have a lifelike charmentirely their own; the Nivernaise labor-ers have the real solidity of peasants,and the traders of the Horse Fair,with blouses blowing about in the wind,remind one of the riders in Gericaults Roman Races. I have a splendid charcoal sketch byRosa Bonheur, which she gave me her-self. It depicts a storm, or, rather, theapproach of a storm, in the Highlands.The heavens are obscured by dark andmenacing clouds, and the wind is howl-ing. A herd of cattle is being drivendown the mountain-side by a frightenedshepherd, who showers blows upon thepoor beasts in his anxiety to reach shelterbefore the tempest bursts. The rout of terrified cattle, the shep-herd wildly waving his arms, are teemingwith action, and are executed in a man-ner that is nothing if not masculine. Oneday I showed this figure of the Scotchshepherd to my friend Henner, andpromptly forced him to acknowledge thata woman painter could also be superiorin the study of the human figure.
