Obligés de nous borner, nous navons pas reproduit cette figure ; maisnous donnons (planche XI) une tête de femme qui a été découvertepar Mariette dans les fouilles de Karnak et que lon croit celle de lareine Taia, femme dAménophis IIP. Quoi quil en soit de cetle attri-bution, ce fragment, qui provient dune statue colossale, est un deschefs-dœuvre de la statuaire égyptienne. Différents indices, que Mariette énumère, le portent à croire queTaia nétait ni de race royale ni de sang égyptien. Il la croirait vo-lontiers dorigine asiatique; lempire sétendait alors jusquà la Méso-potamie. Peu nous importe; mais, comme dit M. Charmes, «lorsquonregarde longtemps ladmirable tête de Taia au Musée de Boulaq, sestraits élégants qui nont rien de la raideur égyptienne, ses yeux allon-gés et animés par la vie la plus intense, sa bouche relevée aux deuxextrémités comme les lè
