This report proved tobe true, and Sir Francis found that in theirhaste they had left behind some ten thousanddollars in the treasury chest. An engraved plan of Drakes descent uponSt. Augustine, published in England upon hisreturn, represents an octagonal fort betweentwo streams, and at the distance of half a mileanother stream, and beyond that the town,with a lookout and church and monastery.The plan shows three squares lengthwise, andfour in breadth, with gardens on the west side.The relative position of the town with refer-ence to the entrance to the harbor is correctlyshown, and there seems no sufficient o-roundto doubt the identity of the present city withthe original location.
