Stalen Island in the latter part of June of that year, fol-lowed, about the middle of July, by the grand armament under LordHowe, consisting of six ships of the line, thirty frigates, with smallerarmed vessels, and a great number of transports, victuallers, andships with ordnance. The Americans, anticipating the invasion of Long Island, hadfortified Brooklyn before the arrival of the British at Staten Island.A line of intrenchment was formed from a ditch near the late Toll-House of the Bridge Company at the navy-yard to Fort Green, thencalled Fort Putnam, and from thence to Freeks mill-pond. A strongwork was erected on the lands of Johannis Debevoice and of VanBrunt; a redoubt was thrown up on Baemus Hill opposite Brownsmill, and another on the land of John Johnson, west of Fort Green.Ponkiesburg, now Fort Swift, was fortified, and a fort built on theland of Mr. Hicks, on Brooklyn heights. GeneralSir Henry Clinton arrived about the same time, with the troops re-conducted from the expedition to Charleston.
