INDEPENDENCE, steamship, 1843 Type at loss : propeller, wood, passenger & freight Build info : 1843, R.C. Bristol, Chicago (builder also given as J. Banta, J. Averill) Specs : 119x26x10, 262 t. Date of loss : 1853, Nov 22 Place of loss : near Sault Ste Marie, MI Lake : Superior Type of loss : boiler explosion Loss of life : 4 (7) Carrying : merchandise Detail : Her boiler exploded violently and she sank in the river. One crewman was blown 2-300 feet into the air and lived. Parts of her wreck have been recovered and made into souvenirs at various times. She was the first prop built on L. Mich and first steam craft on L. Superior. She was portaged around St.Mary's Rapids in 7 weeks in the winter of 1845-6. She used a tremendous amount of fuel in going very slowly and had to stop for fuel every few leagues, until re-engined in 1844. After that she was much faster, making a trip from Soo to LaPointe and back in less than a week in 1847. Ran ashore near LaPointe, WI in the fall of 1852 and was not recovered until October of 1853.
