The Caddoan linguistic familyhad its home in the south near the banks of theRed river, and migrated northward, occupy-ing the valleys of the Kansas river, and reach-ing northward to the valley of the Platte riverand westward to the foothills of the mountains.Two other linguistic families, the Shoshoneanand Kiowan. encroached on our territory fromthe west. They hunted along the headwatersof the Republican and Platte rivers, andclaimed part of the territory of this state, al-though few, if any, ruins of their permanenthomes are found within its present limits.Only these live linguistic families were foundin Nebraska, and but two of them, the Caddo-an and Siouan, are of importance to our his-tory.
