re now maintained, there being two hundred and fiftypeople employed in the manufacturing division at Waterville and one hundred in themacliinery division at No. 173 Elm street, Waterburj^. The company builds rolling millsfor reducing all metals to fine gauges and manufactures general metal-working machinery.At Waterville it manufactures screws, rivets, piano action hardware and screw machineparts. The product is sold directly to manufacturers and the company employs mostlyskilled labor. The output goes to all parts of the world and the machinery is a developmentof their own. The company started with a small building on East Main street, in Waterbury,but the Waterville plant now contains two acres of floor space and covers an acre ofground. It is a modern concrete and brick sawtooth building, splendidly lighted andequipped with steam and electric power, with individual motor drive. It is also suppliedwith sprinkler system and the Waterbury plant is equally adequate in every particular.

WATBRBURY AND THE NAUGATUCK VALLEY 339 0. H. Stevens was secretaiy of the company from 1855 until 1873, was treasurer from 1855until 1894 and president from 1879 until 1894. His son is now secretary of the company andthus the family have been very active in the management of the business. On the 28th of November, 1895, Mr, Stevens was united in marriage to Miss Sarah L.Gordon, of Readfield, Maine. Bj- a former wife he had one son, Berca E. The family attendthe First Congregational church and Mr. Stevens gives his political allegiance to therepublican partly. Fraternally he is connected with the Masons and with the Knightsof Pythias. He is now bending his energies to tlie furtlier development of the business andyet he is appreciative of the social amenities of life and retains an active interest thereinto an extent that preserves an even balance.
