Summary[edit]
DescriptionHollow Way Cottages, Chanctonbury Ring Road - geograph.org.uk - 991234.jpg |
English: Hollow Way Cottages, Chanctonbury Ring Road Viewed from the end of the road though a track continues a little way southwards to the reservoir. Once part of an old crossroads of routes, the old Steyning-Washington road followed the course of the bridleway from the right before heading west a little further up. The route from behind the photographer is Wiston Bostal which goes up the side of Chanctonbury Hill to the top of the Downs whilst Chanctonbury Ring Road runs north to the current A283 and across the Buncton Crossways towards Wiston and Ashington. There also used to be a small settlement here also known as Wiston that at one time was more populous than the original village but the hamlet decayed and was probably finished off by the closing of the old Steyning-Washington road in 1778. Only Malthouse Cottage, out of sight to the left, survives from that period. |
