gthe horse. In the military seat (figure 64) the rider should sit in themiddle of the saddle, taking his weight upon his buttocks equally;the body and head erect and square to the front, with shoulderswell back and the chest pushed slightly forward; the forearmof the bridle hand horizontal, and the elbow close to the bodywithout pressing against it; the right arm hanging naturally, with the hand behind the thigh; the inner surface of the thighsin close contact with the horse and saddle from the knees to thebuttocks, the direction of the thighs being about parallel to thehorses shoulders; the lower part of the legs, from the kneesdown, should fall naturally, and be completely under the controlof the rider for use as aids in directing the horse. The stirrupsshould be adapted to the seat, and the stirrup leathers should beof such length that when the ball of the foot rests on the treadof the stirrup the heel will be slightly lower than the toes, andboth leathers of exactly the same length.
Text Appearing After Image:
Figure 62. Tongs-across-a-wall seat, rear view. 150 HORSES, SADDLES AND BRIDLES Stirrups should not be worn so long as to render the tread onthem insecure, nor so short as to cramp the legs. In either casethe rider is to some extent deprived of the proper use of hislegs as aids, and is not able to maintain a correct seat. Theposition of the foot giving the greatest satisfaction is that whichrequires no muscular effort to prevent the toe from turning out,and in which the sole remains firmly upon the tread of the stir-rup when the horse trots. With the military seat as described, the rider should be able tobend the body forward, backward, or to either side without dis-turbing the grasp of the thighs or moving the feet. He shouldalso be able to move the legs below the knee with entire free-dom without altering his seat or disturbing the carriage of thebody. The toes should not be turned out, as it causes the calvesof the legs to grip the horse, and involves unintentional spurringevery ti
