Its eastern arm is only about sev-en miles from the city limits.Since the days of the first settlersthis lake has been renowned forits beauty; in recent years it hasestablished a wide reputation as asummer resort. Except that it israther larger than the average,Lake Minnetonka is, perhaps, asperfect a physical type of thenorthwestern lake as could be se-lected. It possesses to a markeddegree the characteristic irregu-larity of outline which constitutesthe chief source of beauty in thelakes of this region. The voyagerupon its waters is bewildered bythe multitude of channels and in-lets, the unexpected opening ofnew vistas of blue water, theseemingly exhaustless resourcesof delight to the sense of sight.The extreme eastern and westernpoints of the lake are scarcely adozen miles apart, but the shoreline measures about 115 miles.This wonderful length includes; inaddition to countless bays anddeep arms, as well as long pointswhich nearly divide the lake, theshores of some ten or a dogen is

MIN-MIN 68 lands. In making the tour of thelake the steamers usually followa course, which, though touchingonly the principal landings, is atleast 40 miles long. The lake isdivided by a narrow marsh nearthe center into the upper andlower lakes; the latter being, ofcourse, the part from which flowsMinnehaha creek. The lowerlake is much the larger portionand contains the wide expansewhich won the Sioux name ofBroad-water. As the greatestlength is from east to west theprincipal shores of Minnetonkanaturally received the designationof the north shore and southshore. The north shore is reached bythe Great Northern Ry, whichskirts the lower lake and passesthrough the town of Wayzata, thenearest point to Minneapolis onthe lake. From Wayzata steam-ers may be taken for trips aboutthe lake. Just west of the villagethe main line of the railroad leavesthe lake, but a branch follows thesweep of the shore and crossingthe north arm reaches Minne-tonka Beach.
