Description
Italiano: Verbania-Intra. Lapide che ricorda l'installazione in questa città del primo telaio meccanico d'Italia, nel 1808. Un concorso di circostanze (abbondanza di acqua, legname e manodopera, posizione strategica, preesistente tradizione), che favoriva l'installazione di manifattura tessili, valse ad Intra, nel XIX secolo, il soprannome un po' esagerato di "Manchester d'Italia". English: Verbania-Intra (Italy). Plaque commemorating the first steam looms operating in Italy, beginning with 1808. Several circumstances (abundance of water, wood, manpower, easy transport routes, a previous tradition in manufacture) made possible in 19th century a boom in textile workshops. With more than a bit of exhaggeration Intra was therefore dubbed "the Italian Manchester". Picture by Giovanni Dall'Orto, february 2 2007.
