June i^tk.—I was writing in the tent this morning at1.30 when Hyland, who had been walking along theshore, came in with a very interesting piece of news. Some creature, a seal he thought, was hunting ducksamong*; the floes. In a moment I was round the corner of the cliff andat the waters edge. It was true enough. It seemed as though the bird hadbeen caught by the feet. I never saw the creature land with its capture, thoughHyland thought he could make out a seal on the ice. The drama was ended. As we turned to go back Hyland shot a red-throateddiver as it flew to the river from the sea. Sailor re-trieved it—his lips tucked
