Summary[edit]
DescriptionIceland (MODIS 2016-03-15).jpg |
English: Iceland wore a winter mantle of white on March 2, 2016, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite flew overhead and acquired this true-color image.
As the westernmost European country, Iceland is situated in northern Europe, lying between the Greenland Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The Kentucky-sized island enjoys a temperate climate, which is moderated by the North Atlantic Current. Despite the heavy snowfall and glacial character of Iceland, the winters are relatively mild and windy while the summers tend to be damp and cool. Snow abounds in Icelandic winters, and glaciers cling to the rugged landscape year-round. In fact, more land is covered by glaciers on this 100,250 sq km (38,707 sq mi) island than in the rest of continental Europe. |
