MOHAMMED II., the Turkish emperor, surnamed the Great and the Vic-torious, was born at Adrianople, in the year 1430, and was first called to theOthman throne in the thirteenth year of his age, by the voluntary abdicationof his father, Amurath II. But in the year following (1444), the welfare ofthe empire, which was menaced by the king of Hungary, recalled Amurathto the head of the army and of the government until the danger was over-past,when he again withdrew from public life. Four months after this second ab-dication, a revolt of the janizaries, and the warlike preparations of Christianprinces, apprized Amurath that the reins of empire had been confided to handsnot yet strong enough to guide them. Controlling, therefore, his desire forretirement, he resumed the sovereign power, and retained it until his death in1451.
