Inthe town of Smithfield there is a modern hotel for the accommo-dation of travelers. Nearly all of the steamship companys river steamers makespecial trips to Newport News, Hampton, Soldiers Home, OldPoint, and the Capes of Virginia. The Water Belt Lines palatial steamers leave the companyspier (Campbells wharf, adjoining ferry slip), for a complete tourof the harbor every hour, touching at the above mentionedpoints, as well as Pine Beach (Jamestown Exposition Companyspier). Newport News is twelve miles from Norfolk, and justacross from Pine Beach, at the mouth of the James River.
