eet, Portsmouths mainthoroughfare, the Seaboard Air Line passenger station is seen onthe left. At the corner of Crawford Street, near the curbing, isimbedded a stone tablet commemorating the visit of the Marquisde Lafayette in the year 1821. Going south through Crawfordand First streets (a continuing of Crawford), the visitor entersthe main gate of the Norfolk Navy Yard, one of the largest andbest equipped naval stations in the United States, and it is herean hour may be pleasantly spent in going over the groundsand through the different buildings. Captured relics, whichconsist of torpedoes, Gatling guns, cannon and shell, and avariety of material used in warfare, may be seen here. Afterleaving the Navy Yard, the tour is continued through Lincoln toFourth, and through Court to High, where, in the center of thestreet, stands the Confederate monument, to the left of whichis the Norfolk County Court House, and to the right is the HotelMonroe. NavalHospital is at the foot of Green Street. The hospital buildingwas erected in the year 1829, and stands near the center of aforest grove of seventy-five acres, which forms a peninsula pro-jecting into the Elizabeth River. It is here the disabled U. S.sailors and marines are cared for by the U. S. Government.From Hospital Point a splendid view of the entire harbor andthe extensive water front of Norfolk may be had. Lookingdown the river the mammoth coal piers and export warehousesof the Norfolk & Western Railway, at Lamberts Point, may beseen.
