rched on Jamestown with the deter-mination of securing the commission, and after an exciting scenethe Burgesses appointed Nathaniel Bacon commander-in-chiefagainst the Indians, and the appointment was ratified by Berke-ley. Bacon made his headquarters near West Point at the headof York River. Parties of horsemen were sent in every directionto scour the woods and ferret out the Indians. He was fightingthe public enemy, and doing his duty as an honest Virginian.That was not, however, the view taken by his angry adversaryand Governor Berkeley a second time proclaimed NathanielBacon and his followers rebels and traitors. This precipitateda war between the followers of Bacon and the adherents ofGovernor Berkeley, and Bacon marched on Jamestown in Sept-tember 1676, fought a battle with Governor Berkeleys followersand drove them out, after which he set fire to Jamestown andentirely destroyed it. Bacon was soon taken ill with fevercontracted from exposure during his marches about the country,
