Text Appearing Before Image: robustperson, with fair complexion and sandy hair, possessing acountenance calm, resolute, confident and beaming withintelligence. Dr. Cutter who was born in Maine and whoserved as surgeon of the New Hampshire troops in theexpedition against Louisbourg in 1758, used to speak ofWolfes easy and engaging manners and chivalrouscharacter, which rendered him no less the idol of thearmy than his subsequent services justly made him thefavorite of his countr3^ Despite his own references to his awkward appearance,it is evident that he had a manly, soldierly bearing, notdevoid of grace. His hair was red, his eyes were blue,and his complexion had that clearness which usuallychara(flerizes sandy people. His face as usually repre-sented is positively ugly in repose, although it changedmuch under animation. Excepting the firm severe mouthhis features were decidedly weak. Romney made Wolfes death the subject of a paintingfor which he received a prize from the Society of Arts, andlater, Benjamin West, the American artist, painted hisfamous historical picture, as it is erroneously called, whichestablished his reputation. This pi6lure is well grouped,and contains the portraits of Monckton, Dr. Adair, Capt.Hervey Smith, Major Barre, Col. Williamson, Col. Napierand others, most of whom certainly were not with Wolfeat his death, and several of whom were not at Quebec onthe 13^^ of September.
