ir two pigtails. The boys are taught by the lamas, and it is as muchthe ambition of the Buriat parents that their son shouldbecome a lama, and join the ranks of the educated andruling class, as it is that of the Scotch mother to haveher son become a meenister. This tendency prevails tosuch an extent that the Russian Government has had tostep in and prevent the undue increase of this body, which, being unproductive materially, threatens to drainthe resources of the laity. The term Lamaism has beengiven to that ritualistic form of Buddhism which prevailsin Tibet, Mongolia, and China, while the purer form isalone found in Burma and Siam. The studies of a Buriatlad under the lamas begin very early, strictly speaking,at the age of eight, and last from ten to twelve years.Beginning with the Tibetan alphabet, he learns by roteproverbs and wise-saws, and gradually enters on his cur-riculum of Tibetan theology, Mongol literature, Tibetanmedicine, astronomy, astrology, and Buddhistic philosophy.
