| Description |
Candle lamps and kolam designs. Kathigai Deepam, a local Tamil festival of lamps (not Divali) in December. We got half the day off and at dusk families laid out intricate kolam patterns and lit tiny oil lamps outside their homes. Fire crackers were lit off, of course, and temples were adorned with stringed lights. It was a quiet festival (apart from the crackers), families sitting quietly conversing outside their home, or wandering down to neighbours. Inside poojas were performed and out the streets glowed in firelight. Given the poor state of many street lights in my area, this cast a lovely, warm and inviting atmosphere to the neighbourhood. |
