Finally reaching Taglangla pass, you can see the long, windy switchbacks up the valley. It was incredible how many km we had to travel to basically wind back and forth. It took the better part of an hour to climb from the valley floor to the pass, listed as the second highest motorable pass in the world at 5328m. The road is also under continuous re-construction in a struggle against nature's damage. It seemed a trying task as they seek to build a flat road, at 5000m that will at least temporarily resist the constant rock fall and water and shifting and snow that try to drag it down the hill with everything else. Much of the work is done by a small army of poor Indians, much of it by hand with picks and rock hammers and shovels. |
