spitality that from time im-mi^morial has been the boast and glory of the South.Mrs. Padgitt is one of the brightest ornaments ofour Texas womanhood. As I write I have beforeme a letter from Herbert Howe Bancroft to a cor-respondent in this State in which he in gratefulterms expresses his appreciation of the veryvaluable assistance that she rendered him in thecollection and preparation of material for his TexasHistory. I, too, am indebted to her for many ofthe facts used in the compilation of the memoir ofthe life of her father, the lamented Capt. ShapleyP. Ross. While she takes great interest in liter-ary and artisticmatters and social functions, sheis at the same time thoroughly domestic and de-voted to her husband, children, and householdduties. Mr. and Mrs. Padgitt have five livingchildren, viz.: Buena Vista, now wife of Mr. Fos-ter Fort, of Waco; Catherine, Clinton, Lotta, andRoss. One child, Sallie, died at the age of thirteen, and anolher,Thomas, died at the age of twelve years.
