ng-ton is a republican and was elected un-animously Grand Knight of the Knightsof Columbus, and had charge of all theirwar work drives in Richmond. He is amember of the Commercial Club, theBenevolent and Protective Order of Elks,is a member of the National Association ofWholesale Saddlery Dealers, and a mem-ber of St. Marys Church. Capt. Silas E. Taylor, who was a cap-tain of engineers in the Civil war, earningpromotion from the ranks to a captaincy,has been a resident of LaPorte for overhalf a century, and for many years washead of one of the largest printing concernsof that city. He learned the printing tradewhen a boy and followed it steadily withthe exception of the Civil war period untilhe retired quite recently. Captain Taylor was born at Bath inSteuben County, New York, July 16, 1837.His great-grandfather, Nathan Taylor, wasa native of Connecticut and served in thewar of the Revolution. He boughta tract of timber land at $1 an acre, sup-plied his family and home with the necessi-ties of life by working at his trade, andalso superintended the management of thefarm, where he lived until his death, whenupwards of ninety years of age. He mar-ried Miss Baker. Daniel Bacon Taylor, father of CaptainTaylor, was born at Fort Ann in Washing-ton County, New York, in 1805. He alsolearned the trade of millwright, and fol-lowed it all his active career in New YorkState. He married Dorcas Cothrell, a life-long resident of New York State.
