SchlitzBrewing Co., whose main plant and of-fices are located on the three blocks fromThird street east to the railroad tracksand south from Walnut street to Cherry,The business of this company was begunby August Krug, in 1849, who erected asmall brewery on Chestnut street, between4th and 5th. The next year the firstbeer vaults were built on the present siteof the company. The capacity was thenonly about 250 barrels, and the annualbusiness, up to 1855, ^^^^Y amounted to$1,500. Mr. Krug died in 1856, andJos. Schlitz, his book-keeper, took chargeof the business. They also havetwo other engines of 20 and 25 horse-power respectively, used in other depart-ments.
