Most of the specimens shown in this hall* were collectedfrom Indians who formerly lived or who now reside east ofthe Mississippi River and south of the Great Lakes, a largesection being devoted to the Iroquois—those Indians whowere directly connected with the early history of thecolonies. The confederation of Iroquoian tribes, comprising theMohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga and Cayuga, known inhistory among other names by that of the Five Nations,undoubtedly constituted the largest and most powerful or-ganization ever instituted among natives of this land. Later * The cases on the north side of this hall have been groupedto show the life of the Indians of the Middle Atlantic States andthe Southeastern Area, while those on the south side of the hallillustrate the culture of the Indians of New England and EasternCanada. 22

23 THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY the Tuscarora joined the league of the Iroquois, or the FiveNations, and it then became known as the Six Nations.This league was formed about 1534 for the primary purposeof securing peace and welfare by the enforcement of theforms of civil government. The leaders were astute dip-lomats, as the French and English statesmen of those daysfrequently discovered. The Iroquoian tribes were seden-tary and agricultural people, depending for only a smallpart of their subsistence upon trophies of the chase. The first wall case on the right contains an interestinggroup depicting the home life of an Iroquois family. Thechief, in the center, is about to receive a wampum messagefrom an Indian runner. This runner carries in one hand awar club, such as was used by these peoples, and in theother a string of wampum.
