Spraggi, pens. 7 fr.;Hot. de Londres, pens. 6 fr.; English Church), a seaport with 4800inhab., is frequented in summer as a bathing-place, and inwinter as a health-resort, especially by English visitors. Theorange-gardens contain numerous palm-trees. 58 M. Laigueglia; beautiful retrospect of the wild Capo S.Croce. The train penetrates the Capo delle Mele by means of a longtunnel. 60y2 M. Andora Marina; the village of Andora lies on thehill to the right. Several tunnels. 63(/2 M. Cervo, picturesquelysituated on the slope. 64 M. Diano Marina, in a fertile plain, thecentral point of the great earthquake of February, 1887; to theright, inland, Diano Castello. — The train enters a more extensiveplain, in which Oneglia and Porto Maurizio are situated.

The prison near the station resembles achurch. The train crosses the broad stony bed of the Impero, which theroad crosses to the left by a suspension-bridge. — 70 M. PortoMaurizio (Hotel de France), with 7400 inhab. and a good harbour,most picturesquely situated on a promontory amidst dense olive-groves. Olive-oil is the staple commodity. The finest kinds are pro-duced here and at Oneglia. 73 M. S. Lorenzo. The low, massive towers which rise at inter-vals along the coast to the right of the line, some of them con-verted into dwelling-houses, were erected for defence against theSaracens in the 9th and 10th centuries. — 77y2 M. 8.
